Five Questions with Alex Smith
Former Utah QB discusses his time with the Utes and his inspiring NFL comeback after breaking his leg.
Former NFL quarterback Alex Smith was inducted into the Utah Athletics Hall-of-Fame in September.
Smith, who spent 16 years in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs, and Washington Football Team, led Utah as its starting quarterback in 2003 and 2004. Smith threw for 5,203 yards and 47 touchdowns during his time with the Utes. He led Utah to its first BCS Bowl in 2004 to cap off an undefeated season and was drafted no. 1 overall by the 49ers in the 2005 NFL Draft.
Smith earned NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors in 2020 after returning to play six games for WFT following a gruesome broken leg injury in 2018 that nearly cost him his life. He retired following the 2020 season, finishing with 35,650 career passing yards and 199 career touchdowns.
I caught up with Alex Smith at Rice-Eccles Stadium ahead of Utah’s season opener against Weber State and asked him a few questions.
